Less anticipated perils of nudism: Naked German women found in woods

Less amusingly, exploitation of berry pickers.

Apparently Morrisons sells jars of bilberries from Poland (where they are presumably picked by Poles), and any potential radioactivity doesn't present a health hazard. Alas, I don't have a local Morrisons. I shall have to go to Ilkley Moor when in the north later this month.

ETA: Comments frozen as nude hikers appear to attract lots of spam!

I see from the article that the nakes hikers "ended up groping around in the dark." It sounds like a fun holiday.

But the berry pickers' story is dreadful. I expected better of the Swedes, I must admit, but I suppose you get vultures in every country.

I sniggered at that line, too.

I'm not entirely surprised by the berry picking story because I get the impression that employing short-term migrants to do agricultural piecework at way under local cost is exactly the sort of thing that the Scandinavian social contract doesn't give a stuff about, because they're immigrants. I was surprised at the scale of commercial berry-picking, but that's because I'd never thought of it before.

Just for you, the first part of "Five times Mervyn Bunter didn't get laid in the course of duty, and once he did". I have stalled a bit on the rest and other things on account of sleeping terribly (I blame the weather) and thinking about housing all the time. Must buck up.

I.

Mervyn Bunter, knotting his tie in front of the large round mirror that was one of the few tolerable features of the small studio his lordship had seen fit to rent in Kirkudbright this year, found that despite everything he was looking forward to the evening. It was true that the film to which he was squiring the young person Elizabeth was one he had already seen in London, and that it had merited only a negligible claim on his attention the first time, but as he did not intend to spend much time watching it this was of little concern. He distributed notecase, cigarettes, and a bag of boiled sweets in their various pockets, and, after a moment’s contemplation over the sponge-bag, slipped a small packet in with his handkerchief. The girl wasn’t bad looking, and one never knew.

She wore a surprisingly attractive hat and coat, and introduced him to the box office attendant as a “Mr Bunter, a real London servant” in a tone of awe that promised much. They took their seats second from the back row (pushing things too early never paid off), she ate her ice-cream, and then turned to him her wide, foolish, cornflower blue eyes,

“Oh, Mr Bunter. Do tell me everything about his lordship!”

May heaven rain blessings down upon your head - you are a heroine! I love this. I love Bunter taking a bag of boiled sweets to the talkies, I love the fact that he doesn't have any expectation of watching the film, and I despair at the foolishness of the young person Elizabeth, who could have spent the evening snogging Bunter in the second-from-the back row and blew it. Please, please get your arse into gear and write the rest. Houses? Who needs houses (or sleep) when there is fic to be had?

Elizabeth will rue it in years to come, or so Bunter likes to think. His lordship isn't the only one who can give lessons (although his lordship's are less likely to be conducted up against a wall). I shall try not to be too long with the other four and one times.

Ed. And I hope it is a general need of Wimseyfic and not Wimseyfic as balm to life's trials.

The nearest Morrisons is in Banbury, I think. Useful for picking up late Easter eggs for the youngsters of my clan when heading north and expecting to arrive late.

I have been through, but never into Banbury. Must do so one Saturday and call at Morrisons. (I grew up near the Home of Morrisons - a boy in my class once got sacked as a check-out assistant, because Ken Morrison was also sitting upstairs on the bus on which he boasted about nicking money from the till.)

Morrisons didn't have a high profile in the north-east when I was growing up, but do now after the Safeway acquisition. One of my teachers said that the Presto in my home town (subsequently Safeway, then Somerfield, now Waitrose) had the most intellectual checkout staff in the country, as so many of his students worked there.
