As we count down to series III of The Killing, comes another dark and dramatic presentation from Denmark.

For everyone who's ever watched an advert and thought, "FFS, it's only a [bank]."

TV recorder almost identified. Must just decide whether to pay extra for HD - quite possibly, it is amazing for wildlife documentaries.

ETA: There is also a 'making of' documentary...

That is the sort of cheering up that this week needs.

It has definitely been one of those weeks. I would like to curl up and howl quietly but I have to drive two pensioners to choir.

I'd pay the extra for HD, if it's within your budget (obviously I'd choose normal definition over e.g. food, but if it's a case of waiting a little bit for HD versus ordinary definition right now, I'd go for HD). It hasn't spoilt my ability to live with ordinary definition for something I either don't care much about or care mostly about the plot or the soundtrack, but it does make some things look very good and I think it's the sort of thing where everyone's got it in a few years time and you wish you'd upgraded sooner to get the benefit. Did that make sense?

Thanks for your thoughts. They make sense as they are sort of what I'm feeling. It is in budget (admittedly my budget this month is smashed, but that is because I have bought everything at once after waiting far too long), so its more a question of "is it worth the etra". Had I got round to getting a recorder 2 years ago, as I really ought to have, I would not be chucking the old one now for HD. But having waited this long, I kind of feel that it would be a mistake not to go for the better product now. My parents have freesat, and I have really noticed the difference watching natural history programmes (I know it isn't my TV - it's the same as there's).

Incidentally, if you did want a cheap non-HD freeview option, I currently have a non-HD Humax on Ebay owing to the fact that I upgraded myself to HD a couple of months ago. But if you're buying new anyway, I do think it's worth the extra.

Thanks for the alert! In fact I bought it on Saturday*, but I went for the HD option. I must say I was impressed with Humax, very easy to set up.

*In time for The Killing, which has been driving this sudden get-it-done enthusiasm.

Annoyingly, the HD Humax has a couple of quirks (mostly to do with deleting stuff) that were a bit less quirky in the older version. But it doesn't actually stop me doing anything I want to do, and they do actually put out firmware updates (I'm not sure what the competition is like now, but when I bought the original one they seemed to be one of the few manufacturers that did) so things that are annoying now may not stay that way for ever.
