The worst cover of Strong Poison must be the one in my icon, with Harriet in a painted-on dress. It can be seen in all its glory here. The second-worst, less famous, cover of Strong Poison is this one:

Looking at that leer, no wonder Harriet ran a mile.

At first sight, it looks as though Peter's head is growing directly out of the prison guard's...

I hadn't even noticed that, being too absorbed by the way that the guard is apparently modelled on Rosa Klebb.

That... is really quite disturbing. Enough to make Harriet very glad there are bars between her and the leer!

Though I suppose at least they'd noticed Harriet isn't blonde.

"It's very kind of you, Lord Peter, but I'd rather stay safely in prison."

Though I suppose at least they'd noticed Harriet isn't blonde.

By book cover standards, this is some achievement.

What a horrible cover. The paperback one I have is the one from the 1967 US MMPB, though didn't find it until '71. (It's the middle one in the top row of member-uploaded covers (http://www.librarything.com/work/24938/covers/) over at Library Thing.)

Also, I need to make me some Sayers userpics, I think...

I got you beat; I have an omnibus edition with this monstrosity (http://www.librarything.com/work/51335/covers/31856163). HOLY '80S HAIR, BATMAN! And you can't really tell there, but the flower pattern on the cover has little guns and poison bottles and nooses in it. I think I did a detailed scan a few years back, but I can't quite bring myself to go that far back into my Photobucket.

That is quite, quite hideous. And the only victim that could possibly be is Vera Findlater and she's never struck me as the strapless dress type. Unless it's a Gaudy Night student who's just fallen off Magdalen Tower. Or Maria what's-her-name shortly before she got electroplated into a sofa.

But... but... Peter is behind bars and Harriet outside. I'd like to read that one.

And going by my Five Red Herrings, it looks like once they'd drawn one leering Peter, they thought they might as well get their money's worth and use it everywhere.

It must be the Harriet/Bunter sequel!

Maybe the artist could only draw Peter one way?
