I probably would have considered it a spoiler (I've managed to know basically nothing except for the reason behind the magical chilly illness, so my brain approaches every episode in utter ignorance), but I have reached there anyway :-) I think that one of the things that I am enjoying here, as with Barrayar, is that there is a background that adds depth. I say that I really, really want a story of Piotr in his youth and all that went on then, but do I really? Or would it just not live up to things, because the Epic works better as background to the now.
I think the Emperor works very well as a character. There's a sense in which we see he is a human being and get a sense of his personality and drive, but we don't know him. Which I suppose is the problem for Lin Xie and so on.
