I haven’t read The Lord of the Rings for some years*. I must remedy that. Happily for this day, one of my favourite passages was and remains the following:

And far away, as Frodo put on the Ring and claimed it for his own, even in Sammath Naur at the very heart of his realm, the power in Barad-dur was shaken, and the Tower trembled from its foundations to its proud and bitter crown. The Dark Lord was suddenly aware of him, and his Eye piercing all shadows looked across the plain to the door that he had made; and the magnitude of his own folly was revealed to him in a blinding flash, and all the devices of his enemies were at last laid bare. Then his wrath blazed in consuming flame, but his fear rose like a vast black smoke to choke him. For he knew his deadly peril and the thread upon which he doom now hung.

From all his policies and webs of fear and treachery, from all his stratagems and wars his mind shook free; and throughout his realm a terror ran, his slaves quailed, and his armies halted, and his captains suddenly steerless, bereft of his will, wavered and despaired. For they were forgotten. The whole mind and purpose of the Power that wielded them was not bent with overwhelming force upon the Mountain. At his summons, wheeling with a rending cry, in a last desperate race there flew, faster than the winds, the Nazgul, the Ringwraiths, and with a storm of wings they hurtled southwards to Mount Doom.

*

I love it. I love readin git aloud. I love that Tolkien must have enjoyed writing it, and that sudden sole glimpse into the mind of Sauron as he thinks what every Evil Overlord eventually must: “Oh shit.”

These days it is also overlain by two further points. The first, the Tolkien Sarcasm Page’s** note that Barad-dur is a pre-fab. The second that as the result of a letter by Tolkien on this very passage, I asked my mother what “impotent” meant.

On the other hand, I cannot stand the Eagle's song in Minas Tirith, thanks to the worst moment in the splendid BBC Radio adaptation, that 'orrible choirboy.

*About five?

**Not a trivial resource. It kept me sane during my MPhil (I had not yet discovered HPFGU) and taught me calculus.

The LordPeter Yahoo list will be having one of its periodic fanfic sessions next month, which should be good fun. I was looking forward to doing a few shorts. Everything must be G-rated, understandable given that it isn't a fic list, has no tradition of post-ratings, and is read by many in email digest form. I have no objections to this whatsoever. I think it a sensible rule. After all, some on the list don't really like the idea of fanfiction at all.

I do object to the rule that no slash is allowed. That is, not simply explicit slash, which might reasonably be banned as above, but no same-sex relationships at all. Apparently some members feel strongly and might complain. Well, I don't want to read Lord Peter being converted to Mormonism, Bunter's militant vegetarianism, or Helen in 1946 writing letters to the paper about the foundation of the NHS. But I'm not going calling for them to be banned because I find them rather odd. As a "reasonable compromise", off-list slash may be linked to. I am not generally a ranter, but I feel that I could safely bet quite a bit on who has been pushing for this behind the scenes.

I have sympathy for mods of a group like this. I don't intend to break the rules. I have written to the mods noting my discomfort with the policy of coddling bigots rather than telling them where to stick it. I am however, considering - given that with an LJ and an AO3 account, and having posted a fair bit of fic to the list in previous challenges, it is easy for me to do so - not posting any fic on the list and only linking to it. One of the fics I had intended to do was the "elderly Bunter has a heart attack" story, which believe me did not contain explicit sex, but is now apparently banned. I really don't see why I should be obliged to label this unclean because the narrow-minded can't cope with a sick old man getting a bit emotional. Ah well, if I do do a conscientious objection post, I shall certainly enjoy it.
